Equipment and appearance
Budget tablet DIGMA 10 A500S arrives at the owner in a small cardboard box. The front has an advertisement for a gift in the form of a three-month subscription to Yandex Plus, while the back, in Russian, lists the main features of the device.
Inside, the tablet is hidden in a special bag. A transport film is pasted on the display with duplicate information about the gift subscription. The device comes with a 10W charger, a microUSB cable, instructions, a warranty card and a gift subscription code. An interesting fact is that DIGMA usually uses orange accessories, but in this case the power supply and cable are classic black.
Visually, the DIGMA 10 A500S does not differ from other representatives of inexpensive ten-inch tablets. The screen is framed by fairly large bezels and the front camera is in the top right corner, which I think is useful as it’s comfortable to use no matter how you hold the tablet: horizontally or vertically.
The power button and the combined volume rocker are on the right side.
In addition, users are waiting for a 3.5mm headphone jack and an old microUSB to charge. In between is a flap that hides slots for microSD and SIM cards. To ensure that the user does not accidentally confuse them, there is a designation on the back of the device next to each connector. The bottom and left ends of this model were left unused.
The back is not particularly noteworthy: in the upper left corner there is a camera with a flash, in the center is the company logo and name, below is technical information. You can see the speaker holes in the bottom corners. Unlike the DIGMA CITI 10 E402 4G mentioned above, this model has got two real speakers, that is, it offers stereo sound, which makes watching movies, listening to music or playing games more comfortable.
The housing of the device is made of plastic. It’s black and matte, there are no more prints, which is good news. The model demonstrates good mounting and ergonomics, it is quite possible to hold it with one hand.
Among the shortcomings, one can distinguish the top location of the charging connector, as well as the speakers moved to the back: when the tablet is on the table, the sound is muffled.
The DIGMA 10 A500S is equipped with a 10-inch IPS screen. The resolution is 1280×800, which can be considered a low value for this diagonal, but in reality the image quality is not affected. Pixels are not visible, the device shows wide viewing angles, the screen is well adjusted and displays colors naturally. At minimum settings, the screen does not dazzle in complete darkness, the brightness is sufficient for comfortable use at home. In the sun the photo will have to look good.
For such a cheap device, the screen is a solid five. Watching movies, surfing the internet or reading books about it is more than real, even with prolonged use the eyes do not get tired. For example, I spent about 5 hours continuously with the tablet on trains and experienced no discomfort.
Everything is modest in settings: you can change the font size and icons, change the wallpaper, turn off the screen, display information on the locked screen, activate the dark theme.
Performance and software
As a hardware part, the state employee of DIGMA has a Spreadtrum SC7731E quad-core chipset and 1 GB of RAM. This is the most modest iron and you should not expect serious performance from it. However, the device is given to play movies and music, surf, chat in Telegram.
Of course, a modest filling is felt, and the reaction of the tablet is not lightning fast, but with its work it does not cause irritation or reluctance to pick it up. For a device with a price tag of 5500 rubles and 1 GB of RAM, this is good.
The Antutu test could not be run because the benchmark is simply turned off when passing. It seems to me that it does not make much sense, everything is clear: the model is certainly not for games, but for simple tasks without running a large number of applications at once, it will be enough. However, if you really like testing, you still managed to run something:
As for persistent memory, the situation here is not too good. 16 GB is allocated for storing information, and this is extremely small. You have to understand that even if you do not install many applications and limit yourself to a few necessary ones, and save all multimedia files on a USB stick, in any case in a few months you will encounter the fact that you are running out of memory. This is the essence of the Android operating system, which slowly but surely floods the memory with various updates, incomprehensible files, etc. You can handle this, but you will have to periodically clean everything manually, but it is easier to simply return the tablet periodically to factory settings.
The software for the DIGMA 10 A500S is a light version of Android 10 Go without any settings. Of the redundant users, only mandatory Russian software awaits, everything else is standard. There is nothing to say about the software: this is the well-known Android, a few screenshots below will help you understand what is at stake.
Camera and communication
The DIGMA 10 A500S is equipped with two cameras: 0.3 MP as the front module, 2 MP for the main lens. Their quality is expected to be mediocre, but you can’t expect otherwise. Even more expensive tablets will not be able to surprise with the quality of the photo, since this parameter is to this day the weakest link in this type of mobile technology. The cameras installed with DIGMA are designed to provide video communication to the user, and for that they are sufficient.
Wireless modules are represented by a fairly wide selection:
- The tablet has 3G support, with which you can make calls via the internet. Simple conversations allow you to record conversations, subscribers on the other hand are not notified.
- Bluetooth 4.2 allows you to connect wireless headphones, I have not noticed any gaps or serious delays.
- Wi-Fi module can only work with a frequency of 2.4 GHz, in addition, the tablet can act as an access point.
- The presence of a GPS module in the device is nice, thanks to which you can use it as a navigator in the absence of the Internet, if you download maps in advance.
The model is equipped with two speakers, which is useful, but the sound is flat and completely unspoken, and even unpleasant at maximum volume. For this reason, I don’t recommend listening to music on a tablet, but you can watch movies or some videos.
There is no multimedia speaker and so it is better to use a headset for conversations otherwise everyone around you will hear the content of your conversation. The built-in microphone is good at picking up voices.
A 5000 mAh battery is responsible for autonomous work in the DIGMA 10 A500S. This is a fairly modest figure, but in tests and in real life the device lasts about 5 hours. In my opinion, this is a good indicator for a budget device. Although it all depends on your needs, if you need a tablet that you will use all day, this is certainly not enough. If the purpose of the purchase is to periodically brighten up free time, then 5 hours of work should be enough.
Remember that the model has power saving settings, and you can also disable wireless modules and lower the screen brightness. In this case, it will be possible to increase autonomy.
Charging is carried out by a 10W power supply and takes about 3-3.5 hours, which is a very long time. However, it is wrong to expect a little more from the device for 5.5 thousand rubles in order to evaluate what you can get for this money.
DIGMA 10 A500S costs about 5,500 rubles. For this money you get a high-quality display, a good build, a fairly up-to-date Android 10 Go with virtually no extra software, GPS, a 3G module with call support and stereo sound. All this is enough to watch movies, use the tablet as a navigator, surf the Internet, communicate with friends by voice or video. In my opinion, this already fully justifies the cost of the device.
The main drawback of the model is a small amount of memory. Here we have to make a reservation that 1/16 GB DIGMA 10 A500S shows good performance out of the box. Yes, somewhere something does not work very fast, but in general the device is sufficient, there are no serious brakes and freezes in it. However, it will take several months and the lack of memory will definitely manifest itself. Therefore, think in advance: are you willing to make periodic efforts to restore the device to its original performance by cleaning or resetting it, or should you immediately add some money and buy something better, at least with 2 /32 GB, such as the DIGMA CITI 10 E402 4G.
Among other shortcomings, I would like to mention the prime location of the charging connector and the flat sound, but these are more nitpicking than serious drawbacks.
In summary, the DIGMA 10 A500S is a good device for children and the elderly, but also for those looking for a big screen to watch movies, read books, surf and don’t want to spend a lot of money on a purchase.
