Ah, nostalgia – if you use this feeling skillfully, success is guaranteed. This is exactly what the authors of beat’em up Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Shredder’s Revenge did, taking the legendary image of the cartoon turtles of the 90s and moving classic games about them like Turtles In Time through time – which eventually became happened, you can probably guess for yourself.

You’d expect me to be a huge fan of the Turtles and have spent my entire childhood watching them eat pizza in the sewers and endlessly antagonize the Shredder, but no, the cartoon wasn’t my favorite as a kid. That’s why I’m writing a review from the position of a neutral gamer who didn’t look at the game through the prism of nostalgia.

…that’s what I thought until I launched Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Shredder’s Revenge – it manages to immerse you in childhood from the very first frame, when it displays a screensaver indistinguishable from the 1987 animated series. It even caused childish joy in me, and it’s hard to imagine what the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fans had there. The feeling that there is not a laptop screen with a game in front of me, but a TV with a cartoon, only left me at the end of the passage.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Shredder's Revenge

Shredder’s Revenge tells a simple story that begins with Bebop and Rocksteady attacking Channel 6 and stealing some nightmarish devices in order to assemble the Krang and bring Shredder’s evil plan to life. Naturally, the Turtle team, along with Splinter and April O’Neil, quickly jump into the same van and hunt for the villains.

The game consists of short missions lasting 5-10 minutes on a medium difficulty – we drive around the points on the world map and knock down everyone we meet, including boss at the end of the level. In Shredder’s Revenge we visit many locations from the original animated series: we drive through Manhattan, we visit Coney Island and even look into Dimension X. Of course the Turtles’ path falls through the sewers too – where without it?

But before chasing down Shredder, we’re given a choice of hero: Michelangelo, Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello, April, or Splinter. There is one more character, but that opens up after a full passage. Each hero has three parameters (attack distance, speed, strength), techniques and moves, and the gameplay for each is unique. No wonder the game offers to change the character after each launch.

In terms of gameplay, this is a traditional beat’em up, with the classic mechanics somewhat modernized by the experts of the genre who worked on Street of Rage 4. Before the start of the game session, we are presented with keyboard shortcuts for 21 tricks and different situations, and if you don’t understand them, get ready, like me, raking everyone you meet.

All that is required of us in the level is to beat everyone (don’t pull a surprising face). There are many enemies and each one requires a unique approach, and on the levels we will meet destructible objects that can hide delicious pizzas that restore health or give bonuses, or secret items necessary for 100% completion.

Challenges are provided for each mission – try not to take damage, throw 5 enemies to the screen, destroy the “fourth wall”, use improvised items in a battle with four opponents … They are challenging, but not required.

Heroes rank from 0 to 10, which they gain gradually. You don’t need to upgrade anything here alone – the characters will have extra lives or special moves when they reach the rank. Nothing supernatural, so the heroes can be safely changed while passing.

The game is short, lasting only 2.5 hours, but this is provided you have the same crooked hands as I do – on the medium difficulty, I managed to lose, and more than once. Although I won’t call the game easy, some bosses and enemies will force you to think carefully about the battle and not fly at them with all the attacks that come to mind. There are only 16 levels in Shredder’s Revenge, but a boss is waiting for you on each of them, and eventually two at a time.

Beautiful pixel graphics, smooth animations, humor, 16-bit music – all these components merge more with the atmosphere of the game and evoke a feeling of nostalgia, even if you have only seen one cartoon series. Or not looked at all.

I was happy with the support for the gamepad – I plugged in the DualShock 4, there were no problems with recognition and all button icons in the game were replaced with those on the gamepad

But it’s even cooler if you have friends with whom you can share this fun and brighten up the evening – the game supports co-operative passage behind one screen and over the network, and five friends can be teamed up at once. The joint passage will no doubt be filled with laughter and unforgettable moments, but it won’t be boring alone either.

The recipe for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Shredder’s Revenge is as follows: we take the classic beat’em, spice it up with modernized mechanics, add a pinch of nostalgia to old cartoons… Oops, exaggerated! But no, it turned out great – this is a great game of its genre, which we have boldly put on the shelf next to Street of Rage 4 and advise everyone to play.

Remark: I know about the unpleasant situation regarding the localization in the Russian language – the developers removed it just a few hours before release, calling it a mistake. That’s how it is, or done for other reasons – I can’t say. However, it is quite comfortable to play without translation, because it is almost not necessary here – a page of text will be typed in the game and it will be understandable in English
